The Nightbirds

Neither of us could sleep after the evening's excitement

meals served in the morning's darkness
Even after we were spent we still went looking for nourishment
To talk and watch across the table and see the thoughts come alive
I can imagine how we must look to the patrons of this place
As they move in and back out of the chilly American night
I wanted this with you

To me this brings delight
To be a nightbird has always been an ideal place in my life
To be intimate but not quite in love
To be a nightbird here and now
So I may look across the table
in smiling adoration

before the morning's sleep which is surely to come.
